There could be a canker or crown rot problem that has grown large enough to cause the damage you note. A wind storm can literally twist the tree in place teaning the root system enough to do this too. if the green below the bark is a dark green and wet looking, there may be a chance for recovery. If it changes to or already is a dry light green color, the tree is continuing to decline. if it does not leaf out next spring or there are no buds or very small buds now, the tree is likely not going to make it. Cherry wood makes a great firewood.
