Cherry Tree

I have a flowering cherry tree approximately 25-30 years old. It flowered beautifully in the spring. Leaves started looking dull green then brown. All the leaves on the tree are dead. If I break a stem it is still green inside, so I think the tree is still alive. Any suggestions or should we cut it down. I know the cherry trees don't have a long life span. Thanks, Patti

There could be a canker or crown rot problem that has grown large enough to cause the damage you note. A wind storm can literally twist the tree in place teaning the root system enough to do this too. if the green below the bark is a dark green and wet looking, there may be a chance for recovery. If it changes to or already is a dry light green color, the tree is continuing to decline. if it does not leaf out next spring or there are no buds or very small buds now, the tree is likely not going to make it. Cherry wood makes a great firewood.
