Crepe Myrtle is not a plant grown in my area of illinois, yet pruning practices are similiar to other ornamental plants. you will need to chose the basic structure you want by selecting a few trunks. you can improve the general shape by selectively removing some of the lateral branches to create more of a canopy. Clemson as a pretty good fact sheet. http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/plants/landscape/trees/hgic1009.html
