ARBORVITAE DEATH

WE HAVE A ROW OF 8 ARBORVITAE PLANTED 6 YEARS AGO AND THRIVING UNTIL THIS JULY ONE TURNED COMPLETELY BROWN OVER TWO WEEKS AND THE NEXT ONE SLIGHTLY DOWN HILL HAS DONE THE SAME, IN THE SPACE OF ONE MONTH. THE NEXT PLANT DOWN HILL AGAIN HAS BRANCHINGS ON THE BOTTOM TURNING BROWN, BUT MORE SLOWLY ON THE DISEASED NEIGHBOR SIDE, AND OPPOSITE. THE REMAINING 5 ARE PERFECT. I DON'T SEE EVIDENCE OF MITES, OR INSECT DAMAGE. STILL TRYING TO GET A LOOK FOR "FRUITING BODIES." WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO PREVENT THE OTHERS' DEATHS? THEY ARE ABOUT 4 X 10 FT.

Depending on your weather pattern the last several years, your plants may be suffering from environmental stress. For evergreens that is an uneven amount of rainfall, usually too little on a regular basis. While they are all Arbs, each has developed a unique root system, some more robust than others. Be sure they are well watered as they enter your "winter" in NC and in the spring a feeding of a tree and shrub or evergreen fertilizer would also be in order. As long as they can actively grow, be sure to keep up with the water.
