I have some shrubs and trees that I would like to fertilize this fall. I have read different answers as to when; mid-October, 1 month after killing frost (which has not occurred here), late fall, etc. Can you provide me a definitive answer - I live in northern Illinois, near Naperville.

Once fall color shows up, you are ok to fertilize with a low analysis nitrogen fertilizer. Roots continue to grow well after the trees and shrubs have gone dormant. You can fertilize as late as early November.
