River Birch Trunk

Can I peel the trunk to reveal the beautiful white trunk? My husband thinks the peeling trunk might be a protective covering and removing it would damage the tree.

Peeling the bark away is not a common practice. Birch trees exfoliate bark routinely as the trunks continue to grow and expand revealing younger bark below. revealing the bark below ahead of the natural exfoliation may not harm the tree, yet exposing younger bark before it is ready possibly could
