grass around tree trunk

Why does the grass ground cover rise higher in a mound around my tree trunk as the tree grows. The grass around the trunk was level when the tree was young. What can I do to have the ground level around the tree? Are the roots not getting enough deep watering? Are the roots rising up?

As any tree grows in height and the trunk in girth, the crown of the plant at the soil line and related roots are doing the same thing. This is normal. A root for example that started out 4 inches below the soil line may now be 10 inches in diameter, exposing the top of the root above the soil line. The crown is the transition between the root system and the trunk and grows larger as the tree matures.
