Ratibida pinnata and Rudbeckia Triloba

From: Ray Wronkiewicz (Aurora, IL) Phone: 630-849-5020 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Something is attacking the roots of Ratibida pinnata and Rudbeckia triloba I have growing in my garden. Later in the season, mature plants will start to dry up like cut flowers and the root system is already dead. There are no breaks in the stems. The plants will pull out of the ground as if they have no roots. I don’t see any macroscopic pests. What is attacking the roots?

Hello: assuming there is not a problem with water laiden soils and root rot, I suspect either a root maggot, wireworm or a weevil is feeding on the tender roots. this situation seems severe enough to warrant the use of a soil insecticide. Products containing Bifenthrin as an active ingredient are effective. Plants near the edge of beds near turf may be more impacted by soil insects.
