Hi. I was hiking in Eastern PA in the woods and found several pieces of dead branches that looked like they were dyed green on the inside. What is it and what causes that?

Thank you!

there are organisms that can live within the tree while it is alive and can "stain" the tissue. vascular diseases can leave behind a blue or blue gray stain. If this has been laying around away, it could be a green algae or another decay organism. If there is a a local resource from a Forest preserve district for example they may be able to provide additional information.
