Violets dying

For the past 30 years, I've allowed large beds of violets (wild I guess) to grow in my yard, mostly under trees. I pull some but not all weeds among them, and periodically - maybe every 5 years or so - I mow most of the area. This year, for the first time in recent memory, many violets are dying. First the leaves become fringed with yellow, then eventually the plant reduced to a mushy pile of yellow. Can you tell me what is happening, whether I should be worried, and what I could/should don? Thank you!!

I am sharing two resources related to violets and potential problems they can have. As wide spread as you describe and the kind of weather we have had this spring, certainly an environmental cause is likely. Cold wet weather can set up plants to be infected by a lot of crown rot and root root pathogens. https://ipm.illinois.edu/diseases/rpds/613.pdf https://extension.psu.edu/viola-diseases.

Thank you so much for replying, and so quickly! I do suspect it is root related. Will study the info at links you shared, and let you know if I can figure it out.

Perfect! My husband will definitely call them or visit. Me, I always begin with the internet...

I'm always surprised and grateful for the amazing resources provided in Illinois!
