Odd circle around tree

I have an odd circle of dirt forming through the grass around a large pine tree. It started out small and has continued to grow in a circular pattern. It is almost as if a large tire caused it, but no machines have been back there. Is this cause for worry?

As described, this might be something fungal or perhaps a sun shade issue. If you can send me a photo, be happy to look. hentsche@illinois.edu, Subject line: rings around pines.
