Last fall, my roses lost all their leaves except for a few at the shoot tips. What caused the problem and could I have prevented it?

The most common reason a rose looses it leaves is due to a disease called black spot. You need to use preventive fungicides (get at least three chemically unrelated fungicides and rotate through on a 7 to 14 day schedule depending on how often the foliage gets wet from dews, rains or over head watering. start treatment at bud break and maintain spray schedule till after Labor Day.
