can anyone explain to me why zinnias that seem to be doing well suddenly dry up and wilt, with the leaves remaining pale green?

If you did not buy powdery mildew resistent zinnias, The disease usually has killed them by now. The heat may have allowed to dry so rapidly that some of the green chorophyl failed to turn brown. The pale color may be due to the dry chlorophyl showing through the white fungus.
