We have a brand new Contorted Filbert and no experience in caring for one. I have found some information on the web, but I'm left a few questions. I have read that the sucker roots must be pruned in order to keep the the branches growing in their proper contorted formation. Can the suckers be pruned at any time throughout the season or do we need to wait until pruning season (which I gather to be late winter or before the sap starts flowing). I'd asppreciate any information and clarification of any misconceptions. Thanks! Lori D. Anderson

Unwanted sucker growth should be removed as soon as seen to minimize many more suckers developing. In others check the plant at least once a week during the entire growing season and remove the unwanted suckers while they are still tiny.
