If you would-be so kind as to advice me of the best course of action I would be grateful Problem: I bought a new house last year. I'm mid may I applied Scotts crab grass barrier to the lawn. Then about 4 weeks later I applied some lime on a friends advice he said it will help the lawn. After about 3 days I noticed a large increase in crabgrass and it got worse from there, about 80% of the lawn was now crabgrass. I applies come liquid crabgrass killer to see if that would help, it did very little to help. So my question now is what steps should I take?? I have looked at the grass this week . The old grass and crabgrass comes away by hand very easy when you pull it . Should I Aerate??? thatch ?? what steps would you suggest I do. Look forward to your reply Charlie

It sounds like the lime killed the lawn and the crabgrass filled in but since it is an annual it dies off for the winter. Never add lime or sulfur to anything without getting a professional soil test (do not buy or use a home soil testing kit) and make sure you pay for a recommendation based on the soil test. Based on the soil test add any needed nutrients and rototil them in (you can rototil in the dead grass). Level soil with leaf rake and remove any large clods. Reseed or sod and water to establish. If you lay sod - core aerate in fall to improve rooting. Do not use any herbicide till fall.
