There are some very large Pin? oak trees in my back yard. These trees have developed a strange growth on their branches. These growths surround the branch and developed a prickly appearance this spring and the branches don't seem to have as many leaves. I am worried about losing these trees. Do you know what this strange round prickly growth might be? It isn't on the other trees in my yard.

Hi, If you could email me a pic of the growth that would help. One possibility would be a burl. See pic - http://www.upenn.edu/paflora/plantclinic/burl.htm Burls will not kill the tree.

I have northern oak trees on a lot that just about all have developed a round growth like that pic there except it has some thorn like spikes comming out o them. It seems to have spreed to trees young and old, but more spots on the 6-10 foot trees. about 100 trees with this, there are a few pines on the lot but not strange growths. Anyway to stop?
