Hollyhocks not blooming

Hollyhocks in my yard arrived on their own. I did not plant them, but I like them. The stems produce many flower 'buds', but very few of them blossom into a flower. Some are nine feet tall. Should I have pruned the top of the growing stem when they were shorter, to promote flowering? Any answers would be appreciated.

Sounds like the hollyhocks are getting either too much fertilizer some how (height and flowers aborting0 or they are getting botrytis (a disease that often infects flowers and flower buds). If I could see some pictures of the growing site and some pictures of the browning buds, I may be able to be more accurate in determining the reason for the buds aborting.
