I just recieved a hibiscus as a gift and would like it to grow like a tree. Is it my understanding that I am to stake it and pinch all other shoots off, just leaving the top one and continue to do so to reach my desirable height? Please advise, as I have never experiemented with this behavior

That is correct if you want the single stem. Hopefully you were given a plant that is hardy outside in your climate. In Northern Illinois if we try to grow the indoor/greenhouse kinds out door year round, they will freeze to death. So we need the outdoor large shrub ones that can survive our winters
