My hardy hibiscus have finished blooming and the leaves are turning brown when should I cut the back I usually cut them bac a little later but the look so bad I would cut the now if I knew it would not hurt them I usually cut them down to about 12 - 18 inches from the ground awaiting your reply thanks

Despite how bad they look, if you prune before they are dormant, they could try to regrow. The new growth would not be winter hardy and you could loose the entire plant. Wait to prune when you usually do it.
