Blackspot clean-up

At this time of year the mulch is a bit sparse. Some of my roses have blackspot. I am assuming the other roses are at risk. What is the most efficient way to clean up? I thought if I removed every leaf, swept with a broom and sprayed all of the roses with a fungicide followed by a spray in the spring. What do you think? Also, in the event I miss some leaves should I spray the soil? Thank you, Angela

First off, the disease overwinters on dead leaves and as a canker on the rose canes. It also blows in the wind from untreated sites. Sanitation of all infected tissue needs to be done before bud break in the spring. As for a fungicide, you need to control black spot by spraying every 7 to 14 days from bud break to frost in the fall in order to keep black spot in check. Do not use the fungicide on the soil. Black spot can not survive in the soil.
