With a recent freezing rain followed by very cold temp, I had really slick steps and walkway, I didn't think my pet friendly MgCl pellets were helping and tried some old coffee grounds to add traction. I couldn't do this on a large scale but was wondering if this would hurt the lawn. I even had some eggshells I thought about grinding up to add. I normally compost these but if I could use for ice, I would prefer them to salt or sand. Thoughts?

Coffee ground are not going to harm your grass if you use them on your sidewalk. They may be effective until they absorb moisture and soften. Sand being a very small rock will not break down. If you decide to use sand or a combo of sand and grounds, buy coarse or builders sand and not play sand.
