Last week I placed some jelly with with boric acid in it on the brick wall near my doorbell. The ants came after it right away. Two days later I noticed that the jelly was wiped clean. Ants never do that -- what happened and who did I potentially poison?!!

Most likely this was a mammal of some sort, but this is truly is a guess. A wildlife center may be able to help answer the question of toxicity for you. Your experience with a homemade bait is the reason commercial products are designed only for the target pest restricting others from reaching the bait.
