Nostoc Communune Algae

[Post a Follow Up] [Post to this category]

I have a heavy infestation of Nostoc Communune Algae in my oil and chip driveway. It is heavy on two sides of the drive and spotty throughout the mostly shady part. I have done a lot of online research but have not found anyone in Illinois with the problem. Lots of New England, Ohio etc., but no one seems to have a solution that gets rid of it.

Apparently it thrives on Round-up, no matter the strength - it appears thicker when wet and dries to a black mass after several sunny days,

I can send a link to a website that has pictures if that would help.

I'll appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you, Jack Griffith

Hello, These links come from other educators within the Extension System. Here is a link to MSU article

It appears from discussions on a blog that changing the pH using sodium carbonate has had some positive results. Here is the blog link

You may have to cut and paste these links into your favorite web browser.

From reading more about this kind of algae, the environment plays a strong role in its persistance
