Found a baby bird a couple of days ago. No sign of parents. And if we left the bird it would of been eaten by all the wild cats we have in our area. We put the bird in a cage and are attempting to feed the bird with bird seed and water. Is there somone who can come to pick up the bird. Or any place we can take the bird to. Do the birds cary any disease that can be harmful to humans. My 4 yr old daughter likes to pet the bird thru the cage.

Good afternoon, Baby birds need a diet that is high in protein (i.e. insects, grubs, worms...not cat food, etc.). It will probably not fair well on a seed diet at this stage in its development. A licensed wildlife rehabilitator should care for the bird. To find a rehabilitator in your area, go to the "Find a Wildlife Professional" page on this website and scroll to the bottom of the page. Type in your county and the site will provide you with a contact list of rehabilitators who should be able to help you. Birds can carry Salmonellosis. So you should wash your hands with hot, soapy water after handling the bird. I would recommend touching the bird as little as possible. It is stressful for wild creatures to be handled by people, even when they are young. The sooner the young bird can be taken in by a trained rehabilitator the better. Good luck. And thanks for writing.
