I have been told that if DNR has been informed of plant or property damage from squirrels, they will always issue a trapping/removal permit to home owners. Can you tell me if this is correct? thank you!

Good afternoon, Any nuisance permit issued by IDNR requires that the person receiving the permit provide the type of damage being done; the amount of damage being done; and to correctly identify the species causing the damage. A nuisance permit is issued when the type of damage is not preventable by other means, the amount of damage is excessive and the species of the animal has correctly been identified. The IDNR biologist issuing the permit uses his/her discretion to evaluate and determine if a nuisance permit is warranted. The person receiving the permit may be required to perform prerequisite preventive measures before a nuisance permit may be issued. Failure by the person to perform these prerequisite measures may result in losing of the privilege to receive a nuisance permit. It is my opinion that a nuisance permit is the last option given to a person when having a conflict with wildlife. The "Living with Wildlife" Web Site is filled with alternative solutions and preventive measures that can be done before a nuisance permit is issued. Thanks for your question.
