Good morning, Chipmunks and tree squirrels can have either type of peanut. But their natural foods, such as acorns, walnuts, hickory nuts, and seeds, are better for them. Both chipmunks and tree squirrels will readily take handouts (especially this time of year as they are busy storing food for winter). Neither chipmunks nor tree squirrels hibernate during the winter. Instead, they take cover in their burrows (chipmunks) or nests (tree squirrels) during harsh weather.

However, it isn't necesary to keep feeding them. Feeding wildlife can be expensive, especially if you provide food all year. They will find food on their own. But if you have been consistently providing food, it would be best to slowly decrease the amount of food you are providing. That way they will start searching for other sources of food before the cold weather gets here.
