Are Elk being introduced into the Illinois area? On 12/12/08 my wife and I saw two female Elk in the Midewin National Tall Grass Prairie Preserve. I contacted the preserve by phone and email but do not yet have an explanation.

Good morning, No, elk are not being introduced in Illinois. There are a couple of farms in that general vicinity that have permits to own captive elk. There were reports that a couple of females had escaped, and the farm was notified. It sounds like they may have wandered into Midewin. The local IDNR wildlife biologists are aware of the situation.
