In IDNR Region V, which covers much of southern Illinois, the most common animals handled by nuisance wildlife control permittees were raccoon, striped skunk, opossum, beaver, and muskrat. These numbers change from year to year and from region to region.
It is important to recognize that individual animals, not entire species, sometimes become nuisances. In many cases the behavior of the animal may be inconvenient, but is not truly a nuisance. A "nuisance" animal is one that is causing property damage or is a public health or safety concern.
