Hi, I found a small male squirrel in they alley behind our home. He was struggling to walk because he drags his hind legs. I don't know if he had fallen from a tree or was hit by a car or just born without use of his hind quarters. I put him in a cat carrier and have been feeding him black walnuts, apples, carrots, and water. We have tried to let him out once, but he still can't use his back legs and his underside became raw. He is very gentle, but I am afraid he will never be able to enjoy the freedom other squirrels have. What do you recommend we do? Is this something you have heard of? Thank you for any help! Pam

I would recommend that you take the squirrel to a wildlife rehabilitator. The squirrel may have been hit by a car or it might be sick. Without use of its legs it has no chance of survival in the wild. If it is in pain, the best course of action is to humanely euthanize it. In Indiana you can call 1-800-893-4116 to find a rehabber in your area. Purdue has a great website about wildlife in Indiana. Information about sick and injured wildlife is found at: http://www.agriculture.purdue.edu/fnr/wildlife/faq/sick.html Good luck.
