Can someone develop a sustainable wildlife habitat on 140 acres of raw farm land if there is already fair deer traffic across one end. Water i less than 1/8 mile and field is framed on one side with hedge row and one side butts up to 50 acres in conservation easement

Absolutely! You can develop wildlife habitat anywhere that you can provide food, water, shelter, and space. You could do a lot with 140 acres. Having the hedgerow and nearby land in a conservation easement will help attract wildlife to your property. Not knowing what the layout of your land is like, or which species of wildlife you wish to attract, I can't provide specific recommendations for plant species to put in. But I would definitely recommend using plants native to your area of North Carolina. If you call an Extension wildlife specialist in your state or contact a wildlife biologist with the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources they will be able to provide you with advice on how best to establish habitat on your land.

A book I recommend to people living in Illinois is called "Creating Habitats and Homes for Illinois Wildlife". A website that provides a good introduction can be found at:http://dnr.state.il.us/OREP/pfc/guide/introduction/intro.htm

For information in North Carolina I would start with some of the resources found at: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/nreos/wild/wildlife/habitat/index.html

Good luck with developing wildlife habitat on your land. It is hard work, but definitely worth the effort.
