Baby deer

My husband found a baby deer curled up behind our garbage cans by our garage. It is very tiny...no more than a week old. It makes no attempt to move when approached. Is there anything that can be done to help/save it? I would hate for it to just lay there and die. I called our local police dept. and they said there wasn't anything they can do. I put a small bowl or water, milk and lettuce in front of it. I'm wondering if the mother with come back for it or is it on its own? Knowing it's so young I don't think it will survive without it's mother or some kind of aid.

My guess would be that the fawn does not need any assistance. Very young deer do not move when approached. This is part of their survival mechanism. At this young age they cannot outrun a predator, so they lay still and depend on their spotted coat to camouflage themselves. The female only comes to the fawn a few times a day to nurse. You likely won't see her. She is careful not to attract attention to the fawn. I would remove the milk, water, and lettuce. And then observe the fawn from a distance. If you are near the fawn you will keep the female from coming in to nurse it. If you have more questions please feel free to e-mail me.
