Retention ponds

I live in a subdivision that has a retention pond. The retention pond is having erosion problems. Around the pond, the only vegetation is bluegrass. What would be the best solution to this problem: rocks or vegetation. If the answer is vegetation, what would be the best way of going about putting in the plants and what species?

It depends on the situation. Planting native vegetation around the pond might be a good solution. Or, if you want to prevent erosion but keep wildlife away from the area, rocks might be a better solution. Dave Shiley, University of Illinois Extension Natural Resources Educator, knows a lot about pond management issues. I'd suggest contacting him for advise on the best management practices for your situation. He can be reached at: 217-333-4901 or dshiley@illinois.edu
