I'm wondering what I can do to help a fox in our neighborhood who has lost almost all of his fur. He just has a bit left at the end of his tail. Poor thing looks pitiful. He is eating and drinking but this fur loss has been really rapid. He looked fine just a month ago.

This sounds like mange. Unfortunately there is not really anything you can do to help this fox. Mange hits red foxes pretty hard and can quickly be fatal. In severe cases foxes become dehydrated, emaciated, and may lose their fear of people before they die. Having the fox trapped and euthanized would be the most humane thing, but nuisance wildlife control operators (NWCOs) charge a fee. If you are interested in that option you can find a list of licensed NWCOs on the "Find a Professional" page of this website. If you have more questions please feel free to e-mail me.
