I have at least one groundhog (sometimes i see two) with entries under my long front porch. He is a very large fellow who munches in the morning and in the evening. My house, they say, sits on a solid stone foundation. Neighbors say to get rid of them, but the extension lit says that others will take up lodging. Should I have an expert come out and check the foundation to see if he is causing problems? I am happy to have him here. I live out in the country. Lots of wild, unsettled land with a stream, prairie, woods...

It would be better if the woodchucks were not burrowing under your porch. I would recommend live trapping the woodchucks. Before they are released, you will need to fill in the burrow entrances and install hardware wire to prevent them from digging under the porch again. You can either trap the animals yourself or hire a nuisance wildlife control operator to trap them for you. If you trap them yourself, you will need an animal removal permit from an Illinois Department of Natural Resources district wildlife biologist. The permit is free. And the biologist can provide you with tips on how to safely trap and release the woodchucks. I will e-mail you the contact information of the IDNR wildlife biologist who covers your county.
