Beach in Evanston, Illinois -- this morning, I spotted a young sea gull with a HUGE, heavy (weighted??) fish lure with many barbs stuck into and some possibly through his right foot. He was really suffering, making sounds of pain and having difficulty walking and flying. He also appeared to be literally starving, I know these guys have to eat a lot every day. The other birds were beginning to attack him. Me and a bird vet I work for (who is licensed to treat wildlife) tried our best to catch him but we failed after several hours because the other birds kept driving him off to areas we could not access (the beaches are split by huge breakwaters and high fences because many of the smaller pieces are privately owned). If they are a protected species in Illinois, is there anyone I can call for help? I went back this evening but there was no sign of him, however it seems like most of the gulls clear out by late afternoon. I am heading over first thing tomorrow morning with a net, a big towel, a carrier, and lots of prayers!!! But any advice about anyone I could call for help would be appreciated! Thanks!
