Return to Identifying a Mammal

Night screech/growl

We live on some wooded acres outside of Leroy and in the past month there has been multiple nights with some animal screech/growling at night in the woods right next to our house. It sounds more like a cat fight sound (not domestic), but we have only seen raccoons, skunks, coyotes, muskrats and deer on the property. The animal is obviously attacking another animal because there are 'wimperings' and fighting from another animal. Could it be a bobcat? If so are they dangerous? Others have told us it might be raccoons fighting?

It is most likely raccoons fighting. Bobcats are more common in Southern Illinois, but are found throughout the state. Bobcats are typically secretive and do not pose a threat to humans. You can find more information about bobcats on the Illinois Department of Natural Resources webpage at: http://www.dnr.state.il.us/orc/furbearers/bobcat.htm
