Return to Identifying a Mammal

Rare Squirrel

Although I live in central Florida, I have spotted what very few other people have seen. A squirrel with an unusual description. The Squirrel I am referring to is a lot larger than the average Squirrel. It has a black face, with black ears, on a rather larger sized head, with a tan colored body, and a longer fat bushy black tail. It moves a lot faster than the average sized squirrel. I have seen it on the ground it in the the same area of trees, close to a small forest where I live eating acorns. Is this a strange species of squirrel that no one has ever heard of? Or could it be the result of a mix of another animal species, if that is possible?

I think that the animal you are describing may be a Sherman's Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger shermanii). We do not have this species in Illinois so I went on-line to find a photo. Take a look at this page and see if this squirrel looks like the one you have seen. http://cgstudios.smugmug.com/Nature/Florida-Scenics/Florida-Scenery-Flora-Fauna/345790_GH2H8/1/441794408_vnV9n#441794408_vnV9n
