This evening we found a squirrel hanging on for dear life to one of the baby floats in our pool (we've found about 6 this summer dead in there). it needs to be emptied and is green with algae and who knows what else. the poor squirrel was soaked to the bone and shivering. we managed to get it out of the pool and on dry land, but it was freezing and barely moving, so we grabbed a towel and dried it off, then brought it inside in a box to allow it to warm up and see how it was doing. we heard it moving about in the box so figured we'd try to get her back outside, but when brought outside, she just clung to the towel in the box. We picked her up and brought her to one of the trees in the yard that has a bird feeder the squirrels often eat from trying to entice her to climb up the tree, but she refused to let go of the towel and climb on. She went to turn around on the towel and grabbed a hold of my arm with her paws and it freaked me out, so i jumped, and she fell to the ground. But instead of running away, she just did these alligator rolls over and over in the dirt, so we brought her back in the house now, gave her some bird food in the box and are just letting her relax and recover. this isnt a behavior i've ever seen in a squirrel and i'm worried that maybe she's got some big problem, be it injury or illness. The internet is not very helpful tonight and animal control here only works 9-5, so i cant do anything until morning, but was hoping for some guidance. thanks.
