Canadian Geese

We have a huge contingent of canadian geese that land on our property every spring, nest and create a hostile environment for our employees as they approach the doorways to work. Has anyone successfully found a way to chase off or discourage the geese from nesting near walks/doors?

Canada geese can be difficult to deal with once they have established themselves in an area. But discouraging them from using the area before they start nesting is critical. Once the nest is built and the first egg has been laid, you will be dealing with the geese for several months. And Canada geese can be quite aggressive about protecting their nests and young. It sounds like your office is well acquainted with that type of behavior. Canada geese start choosing nesting territories in February. So start the techniques listed below right away. The link below will take you to a .pdf file that provides lots of ways to discourage Canada geese from using an area (Managing Conflicts in Illinois Created by Canada Geese). (The other harassment techniques section is likely a good place for you to start). Use multiple techniques and be persistent about using them. If you have a large flock, you likely have good habitat available, and that will keep attracting more geese. The geese will be persistent about trying to use the area to raise their young...so you'll have to be equally persistent in using the techniques to deter them. Keep in mind that Canada geese (and their eggs and young) are protected by federal and state laws. None of the techniques used should injure or harm the geese. Good luck!
