I was driving the shabbona lake access road and saw two animals that looked like foxes. both were black. Completely black with no other markings at all. They were a mirror image of each other. What were those things?

Identifying wildlife at night while driving can be challenging. The dark conditions and speed at which an animal goes out of view can make a positive ID difficult. Without seeing the animals myself, I'm not going to guess as to what species the animals were.

However, there are black foxes. There are three color phases in addition to the common red phase. The melanistic phase has black fur; the silver phase is black with white tips; and the cross phase is red with black across the shoulders and back. In Illinois, these color phases are rare in the wild.
