Dead baby geese

Very sadly, we found two baby geese in our pond dead. Our pond is a retention pond with a tall ledge all around it. Two areas allow geese to get in and out, but still a big step to get out. Are the babies dieing because they can't get out? We had several babies one week, then they started disappearing. We placed a sloped board today at one of the exits to assist them getting out, but not sure if that will help. Is it illegal to bury the dead geese? Very sad, but not sure what is happening and who can help.

Placing a sloped board may help them to get in and out of the pond if the ledge is tall. Though usually young geese don't have too much trouble getting in and out of retention ponds. It is hard to say why the young birds died. They could have been sick, or badly injured by predators. Canada geese and their young are protected by federal and state laws. But it would be fine to bury the dead geese, just make sure not to bury them near a water source.
