Raccoons do not make good pets, and it is illegal to keep them as pets in Illinois. They are cute when they are small. But they can be very aggressive as adults, particularly the males. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources does license people to care for wildlife as wildlife rehabilitators. But the goal is to restore sick and injured animals to a healthy state so that they can be released back into the wild where they can have a normal life. If you are interested in becoming licensed as a wildlife rehabilitator, I can send you the contact information for the IDNR staff person you would need to contact.

sorry maam but you are wrong. according to my lawyer a person can own a raccoon as a "pet" in illinois. the dnr sells fur bearing mammal licenses for i do believe 25 dollars. the permit is intended fo people who would breed the animals and sell the skins like a fur farm. however, there is no law stating that little furry guy cant be a pet at that point. i suggest finding a veterinarian in indiana to spay or neuter them and get them the distemper shot. but only people who have never had a coon a pet will ever say they do not make good pets. oh another tip. buy from an indiana breeder to avoid the law stating that u can not take a wild animal out of the wild. . enjoy that pet coon ;)
