Unidentified Nest

I've got a mud nest in my garden that's app. 5" in diameter. Intitially, it had a well rounded hole in the top and there was nothing inside besides the rounded cup shape. It was so well rounded, it actually looked like a piece of pottery inside! Now it's got mud over the top covering the hole. What makes a nest like this & what can I expect from it? Thanks-

This appears to be a nest made by insects. Have you seen ants or bees near the nest?
