On July 9th of this I walking in my yard and I saw the grass waving like water in front of me and on closer inspection I saw a lime green snake traveling thru the grass. I did some research and I think it was either a Rough green snake or smooth green snake. I have never seen one before, are they rare here in DeKalb county?

Rough greensnakes have a southern distribution in Illinois. But smooth greensnakes have been documented in DeKalb County. You can learn more about them at: http://www.inhs.illinois.edu/animals_plants/herps/species/op_vernali.html

Fantastic sighting! Those animals are somewhat common at some sites closer to Chicago, but are rare to extremely rare as you go west of Dupage County. I would love to get a photo voucher sometime if you wouldn't mind telling me where you made the sighting.
