Return to Identifying a Mammal

Elongated Rodent

Yesterday around 10:30am, I witnessed an animal come out of my neighbor's corn field and run across my driveway into the bushes about twenty feet from me. It was nearly two feet long, with short legs, pointed head with tiny ears, completely dark brown with a furry, not bushy, tail. It was definitely not a cat, possum, raccoon or groundhog. It looked like a mink or a marten. Are they native to Illinois?

We do not have martens in Illinois, but mink are native and common. You can learn more about mink at: http://dnr.state.il.us/ORC/Wildlife/furbearers/mink.htm
