honeycomb digging

Something dug a volleyball-sized hole in my yard to get at underground bees last night (9/30/2010). It ripped up plants and scattered comb across the adjacent deck. I live in unincorporated Palatine Twp near Rolling Meadows. We have deer, raccoon, possum, fox and allegedly coyote (according to the neighbors). What animal around here could dig up the bees, be nocturnal, seek honeycomb and be willing to put up with bee stings?
