Both species of foxes are doing well in Illinois. Occasionally a cougar or wolf wanders into Illinois; typically these are young males from other states looking for their own territory. Most have accidentally been killed by motor vehicles, trains, or hunters. There are no breeding populations of wolves, cougars, or bears in Illinois. A black bear was captured by Illinois Department of Natural Resources officers in 2009.
