I have an elderly neighbor who has an ubundance of birdfeeders on her property that are constantly full. She also leaves out plates of leftover food, stale bread and feed corn for wildlife animals to feed on. Raccoons are constantly going through my property to her house to feed(among other animals). My concern is that my children are often in the yard playing when the raccoons decide to come through to feed at her house. On one occassion, my husband and son almost walked into a mother raccoon and her cubs(they were literally only 5ft from my son). I also have a chipmunk who keeps burrowing under my front porch foundation, and most recently mice. I have contacted our local animal control and was told there was not much they could do about my problems. They sent my neighbor a letter describing the complaint, but she still continues to feed the wildlife. I cannot afford to hire a private trapper for this problem. Can I trap these animals myself(haveaheart traps)? If so, what licenses or permits do I need, if any, to trap these animals??

You can trap mice and chipmunks without a permit. To trap raccoons you would need a permit from the local Illinois Department of Natural Resources District Wildlife Biologist (DWB). However, the animals cannot be released in forest preserves or other natural areas. So you would need a way to humanely euthanize the animals. The DWB will be able to provide you with advice on how to handle the situation. In Will County the DWB is Joe Rogus, and he can be reached at (815) 476-2523
