Return to Identifying a Mammal

What was this?

I live in a wooded wetland in Clinton County. While walking my lab in the 'bottoms' we encountered a rather large animal (almost as big as my lab who weighs 108 lbs), solid brownish black hair, that was up in a tree. When it noticed us it climbed down the tree and took off with my lab in pursuit. It appeared to be close to the ground, a rounded snoot, short ears, no prominent tail, but I was probably 30-50 yards away to get a really good look at it. It ran into a large downed tree trunk. Any ideas what this could have been?

Did you ever see this animal again?
