Hello, We have 2 coyotes that frequent the area around our apartment numerous times a day. Saturday afternoon, I was out plantng flowers with my dog outside and one of the coyotes kept coming up the hill to 'check' us out while my dog was barking. Each day they seem to get braver and braver and will come closer and closer to our apartment unit. What can we do to seperate ourselves from the coyotes yet still live outside without a fence?

If you are consistently seeing 2 coyotes and they seem to be keeping an eye on your dog, it is likely that they have a den in the area. They will be on guard against threats to their pups, and depending on the size of your dog, they would perceive your dog as a potential threat. The best thing to do is to make sure that there aren't sources of food available to them (i.e., no pet food outside, no trash left outside of the apartment dumpster). And when you or the other people in your apartment complex see the coyotes they should yell at them and motion for the coyotes to go away or spray a hose in their direction if one is available. Basically whatever is loud and gets across the point that they are not welcome (without using methods that might injure them). If people ignore them they will think they can come close. You don't want them feeling comfortable coming right up to the building. So ask your neighbors to be proactive in making sure the coyotes know they aren't wanted near the apartment building. Right now it doesn't sound like they are being aggressive...it sounds like they are being watchful and are testing to see how far they can come. So this is the perfect time to establish boundaries that everyone can live with.
